Optometrist||Eye Care Careers

Optometrist education includes four years of Optometry school after receiving an undergraduate degree, leading to a doctor of optometry (OD). After four years of completing, an Optometrist has the option to enter into a residency program. The optometrist prescribes glasses and calls lenses. They examine the attention for diseases. The flexibility of the optometrist to treat diseases is restricted. This varies from state to state. If the optometrist diagnoses a disease that he/she cannot treat, the patient is referred to an ophthalmologist for treatment.

Ophthalmologist:

An ophthalmologist is an MD who focuses on eye care. An ophthalmologist diagnoses and treats eye diseases with the total range of treatment options at their disposal, including treating and surgery. There are several sub-specialties, including glaucoma, refractive surgery, cornea, and retina.

Optician:

An optician dispenses and repairs glasses. This involves helping the customer select an appropriate frame and explaining options regarding lenses. The optician makes measurements to ensure that the lenses fit properly to the frame. An optician may need to be a license or not, depending upon state regulations. Some opticians add an optical lab, making glasses.

Ophthalmic Assistant||Eye Care Recruiting

An ophthalmic assistant is certified or not. a licensed assistant uses the designation “COA.” An assistant who works for an ophthalmologist is eligible to require the certification exam after one year of continuous work experience. A graduate of a COA school is eligible to require the exam with no work experience outside of the varsity curriculum.
